Negocios sucios. Los Bancos españoles que financian a productores de armas (Dirty business - Spanish banks which finance arms manufacturing.)
Gelder, Ja Willem van, Petra Spaargaren and Roderick Bouwers. April 2011 Setem
SETEM, a federation of NGOs, presents a study of 14 Spanish banks which have participated in the financing of controversial or illegal weapons. This includes investment in nuclear weaponry and depleted uranium weapons. The document mainly deals with examples such as BBVA, Banco Santander, Bankia, or La Caixa.
This paper explores the financial links between banks and companies which abuse human rights. In order to do so, it draws on the example of five major bank groups, which dominate the Belgian financial market (AXA, Dexia, Fortis, ING, KBC) showing how the banks invest in companies supporting dictatorial regimes and abusing human rights.
